The aroma wafting through the storefront of Avalon International Breads is intoxicating.

As you walk inside, you might stand there dazed for a moment, just dreamily inhaling the delightful scent of freshly baked bread. Before you even take your first bite, you just know it will be scrumptious.

Since it first opened in the Cass Corridor in 1997, Avalon has cultivated a devoted following of die-hard evangelists who rave (rightfully) about their double chocolate brownies, sticky buns, sea salt chocolate chip cookies and chocolate brioche, all of which are dangerously good. The cafe offers a full breakfast and lunch menu as well as artisan baked goods, all made with 100% organic flour.

Avalon’s menu updates seasonally. Currently among the specials are a goat cheese focaccia, blackberry danish and an apricot ginger scone. Stop in for lunch and try one of their made-to-order sandwiches like the Tiger Time Turkey, California Veggie or Rafaella’s Magic (monterey jack cheese and house-made walnut pesto with slices of avocado on Farnsworth Family Farm bread). Avalon supports fellow Michigan-based companies to create their goodies, including Bay City’s St. Laurent Bros. Peanut Butter, Petoskey-based American Spoon fruit spreads and preserves, and Detroit’s own Green Toe Gardens honey.

Avalon’s menu is very vegan friendly. It’s not like “one boring option on the menu” vegan, or “you can order this salad without cheese” vegan, but sensible and delicious vegan. Try the TLT with TLC, a tamari-roasted tofu with lettuce and tomato on Avalon’s Wheaty Wheat bread topped with adobe mayo and dijon mustard. The Gardenworks sandwich is delectable as well, made with avocado, house-made basil walnut pesto, roasted red peppers and Michigan-grown organic sunflower sprouts on Motown Multigrain. There’s an extensive selection of vegan muffins, fruit bars and cookies. The newly introduced orange date vegan muffin is a winner.

Avalon’s fresh-baked scent may be intoxicating, but it’s the taste that will keep you coming back for more.
