Your first bite of chicken shawarma at Bucharest Grill is a life-changing experience. The flavors of the tender, spicy chicken surrounded by crisp veggies, topped with creamy garlic sauce and enveloped in a fresh pita wrap will send you swirling into a state of bliss.
It’s easy to see why Detroiters in-the-know are so enamoured with this spot. A favorite for a quick lunch or a late-night meal, Bucharest also offers carry out and delivery service.
The menu features a Romanian and middle eastern dishes, with house specialties like stuffed grape leaves and Romanian sausage. But Bucharest’s shawarmas are the stars of the show. Shawarma is a middle eastern dish made with spiced meat and served on pita bread. Bucharest’s version comes topped with veggies and garlic, and is served with fries.
Tender and juicy, slightly spicy and deliciously garlicky, Bucharest’s chicken shawarma is quite simply the best we’ve ever tasted. At less than $5 each ($7 if you add fries), they’re a real bargain. If you’ve never had shawarma before, make a pilgrimage to Bucharest Grill now.
The kitchen also turns out a variety of gourmet hot dogs stacked with mouth-watering toppings. Our favorite is the Hamtramck, a kielbasa sausage topped with bacon and cabbage. The Detroiter, a knockwurst topped with coney chili sauce, grilled onions on Cheddar cheese, is a well-executed homage to the Motor City. Sandwich wraps (the falafel is very good) and a nice selection of salads round out the offerings.
You may be wondering why there’s such fuss over a humble middle eastern street food, but one bite of Bucharest’s legendary shawarma will make you a believer.
