Before you even set one foot inside Foran’s Grand Trunk Pub, with its carved stone exterior and rounded archway, you can tell this place is bursting with history. Once inside, you’ll discover one of the best Michigan beer selections you’ll find anywhere.
You may have heard that the pub was formerly the site of a ticket office for the Grand Trunk Railway, but its history actually dates back even further. In 1879 the structure opened as the Traub Bros. & Co. jewelry store. Residential units were built above the first floor jewelry shop.
When the railway renovated the building in 1910 the second floor was removed to make way for a vaulted ceiling, rounded archways and paned windows surrounded by terra cotta detailing. In 1935 the Metropole Hotel converted the space into a bar, and it has remained a pub to this day. Foran’s retains remnants of the original structure, like the finely detailed interior woodwork.
Centrally located just a block off Campus Martius, Happy Hours here are bustling with activity as the after-work crowds filter in to enjoy specials like $1 off pints, $2 domestic bottles and $2 wells. The pub offers a rotating selection of drafts and bottles from Bell’s, Arcadia, Arbor Brewing, Dragonmead, New Holland, Motor City Brewing and more.
Signature sandwiches feature prominently on Foran’s menu, including tasty favorites like the Finnigan, a grilled chicken breast topped with fresh mozzarella, spinach and a housemade tomato basil aioli on Greektown Olive bread. We also love the Kelly Garrett, a grilled sandwich made with ham, cheddar, honey mustard and mayo on Dexter Rye. You can’t go wrong with Foran’s reuben or a burger, and the fish and chips – made with Ghettoblaster beer battered cod – are impressively good. The kitchen is open until midnight, seven days a week.
After work, before a game, or over the weekend, Foran’s Grand Trunk Pub is a social spot for a drink, a meal and a fun time.
