One of Detroit’s best-kept brunch secrets is hidden in plain sight.

Fountain Bistro is smack dab in the middle of all the action downtown, perched on the edge of pretty Campus Martius Park. Actually, it’s so convenient that it often gets overlooked.

You might know this place as a laid back spot for happy hour (you can often find us here on a Monday evening, mowing down a plate of chicken wings and sipping vodka sodas), or maybe you’ve been to one of their sold-out wine dinners.

We bet you didn’t know that Fountain Bistro runs a seriously delicious brunch service. It’s not just on Sundays, but Saturdays too. Each brunch day has it’s own personality. Saturdays are lively, with a DJ on the patio, but still un-crowded enough that you can walk right up and get a table without waiting. Stop by on Sunday for a relaxed, leisurely meal.

Don’t even worry about looking at the menu, here’s what you order: Bistro Benedict. This yummy twist on the classic eggs benny starts with a sweet corn waffle, made in house and toasted, then piles on bacon and wonderfully runny poached eggs. It’s all topped with hollandaise sauce and a sprinkling of scallions, served alongside house potatoes sauteed with bell peppers and onions. The waffle is great for soaking up all those runny yolks and tangy hollandaise.

If runny eggs aren’t your thing, you could go for a fluffy egg scramble with sundried tomatoes and wild mushrooms, or one of their other breakfast favorites. If you’re in the mood for something sweet, check out the Napoleon selection. Your choice of french toast or pancakes are layered with luscious fillings like chantilly cream and blueberry sauce, or peanut butter mousse with crispy pancetta, banana, cinnamon and sugar.

There’s also a selection of salads and sandwiches if you’re craving something lunch-y. While you scarf, sip bottomless mimosas or a bloody mary.

At dinner time, there are lots of savory meals to choose from: duck confit, seared salmon, pork tenderloin, filet mignon and the like. It’s not as expensive as you might expect either, with most entrees in the $20-25 range.

But we’ll let you in on a little secret: the best thing on the menu isn’t listed under the entrees. It’s the crepe du jour. You’ll find it on the appetizer list, but the dish was plenty to fill us up as a main course. It doesn’t come with any accompaniments like an entree, so order a side of whipped potatoes or green beans if you brought your appetite. Delicate, whisper-thin little pancakes are filled with ingredients like spinach and goat cheese and gently folder over onto your plate. It’s exactly the kind of dish you’d expect to find in a European bistro: classic, unfussy, and well-prepared. It also makes for a fantastic, light afternoon lunch in the summer. The recipe changes based on seasonal ingredients available to the chef.

You could grab a seat inside, but when the weather’s warm we like to opt for a spot on the patio. The bistro has an all-weather, enclosed patio that’s open all year long, but in the warmer months they remove the windows so you can dine in the shade with a lovely cross breeze. Sitting al fresco with an unobstructed view of the Woodward Fountain’s dancing water is one of the best street level views in town.

Stop by Fountain Bistro TONIGHT (Wednesday, April 29) from 5-7 p.m. for a Detroit Restaurant Week Happy Hour. There will be free appetizers and some killer drink specials. Click here to RSVP. Cheers!
