Healthy just got a lot more exciting.

It feels like it’s been forever since Freshii first announced their plans to open downtown last summer. The breakfast and lunch spot, operated by brothers Andrew and Randy Dickow (also of Lunchtime Global), started its journey to Detroit more than five years ago.

Randy was introduced to Freshii on a trip to Chicago. It’s a Toronto-based franchise that helps busy people find a fresh, delicious lunch on the go. Randy and Andrew decided to open one to help meet the growing demands for healthy lunch options downtown.

Freshii’s menu highlights salads, wraps, burritos, rice bowls, soups, and breakfast fare, with a focus on fiber-rich, slow burning carbs, essential fats and lean protein. There’s a definite Asian and Mexican influence throughout the menu, but it’s all very approachable. You won’t find any ingredients you wouldn’t be able to pronounce (except maybe quinoa).

Normally, we put “healthy” food and “craveworthy” recipes into two separate buckets. It’s not that healthy food can’t be delicious. It’s just that we don’t usually feel the same visceral, gotta-have-it excitement about salad as we do for, say a cheeseburger or piece of really good dark chocolate. But these categories come crashing together with Freshii’s selection of “bowls.” Think of them as salads that replace lettuce with rice or grains.

We love the falafel bowl – made with chopped kale, brown rice, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, chickpeas, and a beet-carrot-cabbage slaw topped with tahini, sriracha and a cucumber-dill sauce. Budda’s Satay is loaded up with rice noodles, crispy wontons, carrots, broccoli, cabbage, green onions and peanut sauce.

If you’re in the mood for a salad or sandwich wrap instead, they’ve got those too. And you can add tofu, falafel, chicken, steak, or shrimp to any dish on the menu.

Freshii’s grilled burritos are light and fresh, yet still satisfying. Don’t expect anything resembling a greasy fast food burrito. Sink your teeth into a thai lemongrass burrito with quinoa, cabbage, carrots, cilantro, edamame and a spicy lemongrass sauce. We also like the baja burrito, stuffed with quinoa, avocado, red onions, cilantro, green onions, cabbage, salsa and pico.

Since you ate such a healthy lunch, you should definitely treat yourself to some frozen yogurt. Oh, yes. Freshii has fro-yo. You could keep it light with almonds and cinnamon, or be a little naughty and pile on the oreos and chocolate chips.

For breakfast, Freshii serves up slow cooked organic oatmeal (the cranberry almond crunch is yum), along with grilled breakfast burritos and grilled egg pockets which come in a pita pocket instead of the tortilla. They also have smoothies and juice all day long.
