We try our best to eat healthy, but sometimes it’s tough to find a meal that pleases both our taste buds and our waistline.
We never have that problem when we make the decision to have lunch at Goodwell’s Natural Food Market in Midtown. Here we can stuff our face with a secretly healthy pocket of deliciousness. We’re talking about the Pocket Sandwich, an edible envelope of love that has developed an underground cult following since this place opened in 2006.
The Famous Pocket Sandwich is made with a vegetarian soy patty, which might not sound that exciting, but these scrumptious nuggets are packed with flavor and have great texture. For anyone who’s ever been disappointed by a sad, bland, slightly mushy block of bean curds, this is the reason to give tofu another try. The patty is tucked into a whole wheat pita pocket then topped with baby spinach, crisp romaine lettuce, freshly sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, and alfalfa sprouts. The contents are then drizzled with a tofu sauce so addictively good you’ll want to order it in bulk.
The recipe for Goodwell’s secret sauce appears to be a secret more closely guarded than the nuclear launch codes. We’re not sure what nectar of the gods alchemy makes the sauce so divine, but we do know that once you’ve tasted it you’ll spend weeks trying to replicate the magic at home.
At $4.25, the sandwich is a bargain. For a small upcharge you can add cheese and/or avocado.
We’re also big fans of the Avocado Delight, which combines avocado and havarti cheese in a pita pocket with the same toppings as the famous sandwich. You can also select a falafel sandwich, or a plate of steamed market fresh vegetables and organic aromatic rice for lunch.
Goodwell’s selection of homemade soups rotates daily and might include a seriously good vegan chili, black bean and corn chowder, garden vegetable with kale and black eyed peas, navy bean, or yellow lentil with curry and lemon. They offer a lovely variety of prepared salads, including a really tasty kale salad.
There’s also a variety of organic groceries, like fruits, vegetables, dry goods, and dairy. Be sure to swing by the drinks cooler and peruse their assortment of kombucha, fresh juices, ginger tea and the like. There are a few tables inside the market, or you can enjoy your lunch on the patio outside.
