Gracie See is proof that it’s Detroit, not New York or Chicago, which really has the best pizza. This family-run restaurant, just east of Detroit’s Warrendale neighborhood, serves up mind-blowingly delicious pies in a casual, family-friendly atmosphere.
Proprietor Grace Puleo and her family are responsible for the delectable fare and friendly ambiance. Her father opened the pizzeria in 1969. Grace later took over the operations, but kept the same look and the same great recipes.
The pizzeria’s interior wood paneling and drop ceilings smack of the 1970s, and knick knacks – collected over the years – festoon the walls. The entire staff is really friendly; on any given night you’ll find a mix of families, couples, and groups of friends casually conversing over one of Gracie’s mouthwatering pies.
Pizza comes to the table bubbling hot from the oven with a soft, hand-tossed crust and gooey-melty cheese that will stretch into long ropes of mozzarella when you attempt to separate slice from pie. The crusts can be flavored with garlic, butter and parmesan, cajun spices, or ranch seasoning. Detroit-style deep dish pies are also available. You can dine in or order your pizza to-go.
Locals in-the-know order the Double Deuce: double cheese, double pepperoni. You may never be able to order just regular ol’ single cheese and pepperoni again after tasting this pie. This is the perfect pizza to share with a few friends along with a pitcher of beer. Gracie’s also offers some more unusual pairings like the rancho pizza – topped with chicken, ranch sauce, and cheese – or a BLT pie topped with bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheese and mayo.
While pizza is the star of the show, the pasta refuses to be overshadowed. The kitchen turns out scrumptious options like spaghetti and fettuccine alfredo. Gnocchi, meatballs, and sausage are all made in-house. Ask for some sliced meatballs on top of your pizza; it’s a really delicious combo. Same with the alfredo sauce (though maybe not together). In fact, a good rule of thumb is anything they have in the kitchen they can sprinkle on top of your pizza.
Rounding out the bill of fare are subs, salads, steaks, ribs, and desserts like cannoli and strawberry cheesecake. With its homey atmosphere, friendly service, and incomparably delicious pies, Gracie See Pizzeria has secured its reputation as the Godfather Godmother of Detroit pizza.
