Rocky’s is a wonderland of spices, nuts and candies. Started as a door-to-door produce company back in 1931, Rocky’s got into the peanut roasting business in the ’60s, and the business kept growing from there. It’s a quintessential stop on any trip to Eastern Market.
Their nut selection is still impressive to see in person. A diverse array of nearly every nut imaginable is on display, from peanuts to pistachios, seasoned with everything from salt and pepper to cajun and beyond. It’s almost intimidating trying to decide which ones to take home. Best to get at least two.
One of our favorite things to do is pick up a bag of freshly roasted peanuts to snack on while roaming the market stalls. The toasty, warm nuts are the perfect salty snack. The shop is located just across the street from the main sheds, so it’s easy to pop in before you go pick out your produce. But get here early, because they often sell out of the warm nuts.
But nuts aren’t the only thing on the shelves here. Far from it. You’ll find stacks and stacks of dry goods like quinoa, lentils and granola. They also carry plenty of prepared goods, like bottled sauces, jams and marinades. There’s dried fruit and veggies, and even a deli counter.
Plenty of Rocky’s loyal fans come here for the spice selection. It’s a carnival of colors and flavors, from seasoned salts to exotic spices. You will find spices you never knew existed. Staring at the rows of gorgeous seasonings, it’s easy to imagine yourself cooking five-star gourmet meals, testing out recipes from far flung tropical locations. Take a chance on a spice you’ve never used before, then go home and find a recipe to go with it.
Most of the good are available in bulk and priced by weight. One of Rocky’s team member will package up exactly how much you want, whether it’s three pounds of peach rings or just a couple handfuls of buffalo roasted peanuts. They also have an entire section just for different kinds of peanut butter, where you can nerd out hard over the flavor benefits of honey peanut butter versus organic unsalted.
