Coffee shops are a dime a dozen, but we bet you’ve never seen a tea house within the city limits. That is, unless you happen to have visited SocraTea. Located in Midtown’s Sugar Hill arts district, Socra Tea is Detroit’s only tea house.
The menu offers an impressive 50 varieties of tea including a caffeinated selection of black, green, Oolong and white tea, as well as a decaf assortment of herbal, fruit, aromatic and Rooibos. All teas have been certified organic. Those who want a caffeine jolt can choose from yummy flavors like cranberry mango, Indian Chai and chili chocolate. Decaf lovers can go for blends like blackberry, roasted almond or orange peppermint. Also on the menu are scones and other organic baked goods, including some gluten free options.
Skeptics who doubt a cup of tea can give you the same caffeine kick as a mug of java clearly have never sampled the Oolong Bossa Nova (bonus: it tastes like hazelnut!).
Socra Tea opened in December 2012. The interior is spacious, airy and modern. The shop showcases local art, including some unique clay sculptures and fantastic works made from reclaimed wood. The cozy ambiance makes this a perfect spot to to idle over a cup (or pot) of your new favorite brew.
