Tucked between Fort and Congress on Third St. sits a historic landmark that houses one of the best bars you’ve never heard of. Tommy’s Detroit Bar & Grill may be the best-kept secret among Detroit sports fans and bar hoppers.
The bar is a popular spot among service industry professionals, folks who really understand what a great sports bar should be. Regulars appreciate Tommy’s for its reasonably-priced drinks, speedy service and straight-up good food.
The menu hosts the usual suspects of bar food, but everything is freshly made and just plain delicious. Their homemade, never frozen, burgers get our vote for MVP. Juicy and flavorful, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better burger for the price. Other all-star players include the hand-dipped chicken wings, mouth-watering house-made corned beef, and Detroit-style coney dogs.
Taps are well-maintained (you may even find a couple Michigan microbrews on draught), and the vibe is very welcoming and un-stuffy.
Tommy’s is housed in a historic building built in 1840, in a space formerly occupied by Mac’s on Third. The space offers all the moderns comforts and conveniences but still oozes history. The basement was used for the Underground Railroad.
Tommy’s free shuttle will transport you to sporting events and concerts downtown. It’s also just a short walk to COBO and the Joe. The bar is usually packed during Wings games, but elbow room is plentiful on other nights.
Tommy’s offers free wifi as well as a dart board, pool table and self-serve popcorn cart. It’s a great spot to watch the game and chill out with friends. Whether you stop by for lunch, dinner or after the game, Tommy’s Detroit Bar & Grill promises a cold drink, a tasty meal and a good time.
