We used to have to trek all the way up to Ferndale to get a taste of the wacky but incredibly yummy flavors of Treat Dreams. (Hey, for someone who’s generally too lazy to leave the city, that was a long way to go.) But now, Detroit has our very own Treat Dreams shop in Midtown, and we are in ice cream heaven.
Treat Dream specializes in unique flavors and unusual combinations of ice cream. Their Ferndale shop has been open since 2010, and over the last five years they’ve made more than 900 flavors of ice cream. Treat Dreams Midtown began a soft opening earlier this month in the space formerly occupied by Melt.
Their unexpected pairings have delicious results. They often manage to pack the flavor of craveable foods into their ice creams. Expect to see combinations like lemon extra virgin olive oil, honey goat cheese fig, or Sunday breakfast (maple, bacon and waffles) on the menu. We even had one inspired by a salad one time, and it was surprisingly un-salad-like (meaning it was awesome).
The menu at Treat Dreams changes often (how else do you think they got to 900 flavors in five years?). Currently on scoop are choices like dark chocolate-chocolate chip, key lime pie, cotton candy, mint brownie, salted caramel, and salted butterscotch.
The salted caramel has had a devoted following ever since it debuted in their Ferndale shop. If you’re a fan of the salted caramel, try the salted butterscotch for a fun change. It smacks of those hard candies Grandma always kept around, but has a creamier, more luscious flavor and texture that is strangely craveable. The salt brings out the butterscotch flavor even more.
Also on the menu this week are unique flavors like Amaretto Gingersnap, Kooky Monster, and Spam I Am. Kooky Monster is a sky blue confection that looks like it’s going to have crazy flavors, but it’s actually a combination you probably know and love. It’s vanilla ice cream – dyed blue – and chock full of chocolate chip cookie bits.
Spam I Am combines toasted coconut chipotle ice cream with Spam sauteed in rum and brown sugar. Yep, there’s actual spam in that ice cream. Before you dismiss this one as too-weird, give it a taste. They’ll happily hand over a free sample and you might find the salty-sweet combination more palate pleasing than you’d expect.
They also have vegan ice creams and sorbets. Try and Arnold Palmer: a mix of iced tea and lemonade. A perfect treat to cool off on warm days.
If you really want to shake things up, order two different scoops in your cone or bowl. Maybe Amaretto Gingersnap and salted caramel? Or key lime pie ice cream with peach mango sorbet? Key lime pie with dark chocolate-chocolate chip? Go crazy, it’s your ice cream.
