Just a few blocks off Corktown’s main drag is a hidden gem that is the first of its kind in nearly 100 years.
Two James Spirits is the first licensed distillery located in the city since Prohibition. A year ago, founders David Landrum and Peter Bailey set out to start building their distillery from the ground up. David is a longtime sommelier and mixologist; Peter is a scientist with a masters in sustainable design and enterprise from U of M. Their unique backgrounds ended up being a match made in heaven for producing really high quality, small batch spirits.
Inside the nondescript industrial exterior you’ll find a boutique distillery, where an impressive 500 gallon copper still is accented by stacks of oak barrels. The real highlight for us is the tasting room, where you’ll often find one of the owners himself concocting libations from a scrupulously curated selection of craft cocktails. The beautifully crafted round bar is surrounded by rich wood, iron, and ornate custom lighting fixtures.
Their 28 Island Vodka is handcrafted from organic soft winter wheat and corn, and has a smooth, balanced flavor. The Old Cockney Gin starts out with the same ingredients as the vodka, replacing corn for rye, and is distilled with juniper and botanicals. The Grass Widow Bourbon is a high rye bourbon finished in Madeira casks, giving it a complex flavor with unique levels of spice.
Also in the works are a Two James Rye Whiskey, Two James Bourbon, and a Two James “Reserve” Single Malt Whiskey, which are slated for future release.
Stop by the tasting room and ask the bartender to mix you a Two James Cobbler, made with Two James vodka, lemon, Lillet Blanc, seasonal berries, and house-made orange bitters. You’ll also love the Dequindre Cut Cup, which mixes gin, cucumber, mint, berries, lemon, lime, powdered sugar, and Dolin Rouge.
Two James’ tasting room is currently in a soft opening. Be sure to check their Facebook page for updated hours each week. Bottles of their 28 Island vodka are currently available for purchase; bottles of bourbon and gin will be available later this fall. You can also find Two James products around town in places like Slows, Roast, and Sugar House.
