Tucked inside a humble exterior on a quiet corner of Bagley sits a restaurant offering some of the Motor City’s best Mexican cuisine. Xochimilco (“so-she-MIL-co”) is one of the smaller Mexicantown establishments, but no less popular. On game days you’ll find the cozy dining room packed with Tigers fans, fueling up for an afternoon of baseball.
The menu is stacked with tons of flavorful Mexican dishes. Steak fajitas are one of the most popular, and with good reason. Served sizzling with grilled peppers and onion, they are mouth-wateringly delicious. Bring a friend and split the gigantic super nachos, which are made with your choice of ground beef or shredded chicken, diced veggies, and smothered in melted cheese then topped with jalapenos.
There are even a few dishes you may not have heard of before, like the Carne de Puerco, a spicy pork stew made with tender chunks of pork and a sauce that is delightfully spicy with a hint of sweetness. The chimichanga is crunchy on the outside, and cheesy and gooey on the inside. Smothered with cheese and guacamole, it’s one of our favorite dishes on the menu.
But the selection doesn’t stop there. Xochi’s menu is a hit parade of authentic favorites like tacos, enchiladas, burritos, flautas, tostadas, chile quiles, quesadillas, carne asada and more. Most entrees are served with a side of Spanish rice and refried beans. Portions are generous, and the prices very reasonable.
Every meal starts out with a basket of tortilla chips which are made in house. The chips are served warm from the fryer with both mild and spicy salsas. We like to spoon a little of the spicy salsa into the mild; it gives it just the right kick.
Xochimilco has a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere and homey, colorful decor. It’s the perfect spot for a quick lunch (dine in or carry out). Stop by for Happy Hour and share a pitcher of margaritas or sangria. Xochi’s offers a full bar, including some great deals on bottled beers like Negra Modelo and Dos Equis. Craving a late-night taco fix? Xochi’s is open until 2 a.m. every night.
